ONE DAY, TWO FILMS AND THREE AWARDS!

Last weekend was marked by Polish documentary’s successes abroad. On Sunday Marcin Koszałka was awarded in Tampere, Finland, and what is more, Piotr Złotorowicz collected awards once again – this time at two overseas festivals.

At the Tampere Film Festival, which appealed more than 750 guests this year, in the international competition Polish documentary cinema was represented by only one title – “Declaration of immortality” by Marcin Koszałka – and it is one among festival winners. The film was awarded “The Diploma of Merit”.

This is the jury's justification:

Through its masterful use of image, structure and sound this film portrays our eternal struggle against both the limits of the physical world and the limits of our bodies. The jury gives a Diploma of Merit in the category of Documentary to the film Deklaracja Nieśmiertelności.

In this documentary Marcin Koszałka returns to a forgotten genre, namely a mountain film. The protagonist of his story is Piotr “Mad” Korczak, somewhere in the background there is his rival Andrzej Marcisz. The director focuses on the decline of the career of the great master, provoking his reflection on his future life, when he will no longer be able to climb mountains. It’s a moving story about inability to come to terms with old age and about desire of immortality.

Moreover, after last successes at the ZagrebDox (“Little Stamp” Award) and Taos Shortz in New Mexico (Award for the Best Documentary) Piotr Złotorowicz has been appreciated and awarded again – what is more, in North America again! His documentary etude “Charcoal Burners” received The Best Documentary Award at the Saguenay International Short Film Festival REGARD, Canada, and also it stood on the podium at the Washington DC Independent Film Festival, USA.

The film “Charcoal Burners” was produced by National Polish Film School in Łódź. This is a story about Marek and Janina who work every summer in the Bieszczady mountains making charcoal. The documentary depicts the simplicity and calmness of their world, an extract of their unhurried life surrounded by wildness of nature. We observe the protagonists during their everyday activities, far from civilization, in the midst of the mountains following the rhythm dictated by nature.
