„THE LAST TRAIN” ACCLAIMED THE BEST FILM OF THE ICELANDIC FESTIVAL

Yesterday evening, during the final night of the Icelandic Northern Wave Film Festival “The last train” directed by Weronika Tofilska received the Grand Prix. This short fiction proved the best among 38 titles produced all over the word.

There were four Polish films among all the titles selected to the festival’s competitive programme– two short fiction films – the above mentioned “The Last Train” and “Glasgow” by Piotr Subbotko and two documentaries – “The Trip” by Bartosz Kruhlik and “Written in ink” by Martin Rath. On the last festival’s evening jury of the international competition decided to award “The Last Train” by Weronika Tofilska – a student of Krzysztof Kieślowski Department of the University of Silesia in Katowice. The film is a story of Antony who has got an overweight wife, a depressing job and feels bitterly disappointed. He has just realized that he is not going to see anything good happen in his life; he is not bound to make his dream about  different life with another woman in another place come true. In this vast overwhelming hopelessness he is surrounded by the only comfort he can get comes from memories about his first love from many years before. Another Polish film that received jury’s acclaim and the Special Mention was documentary “The Trip” by Bartosz Kruhlik produced at Polish National Film School in Łódź.

The philosophy of the festival, upon which its name is based, is Nouvelle Vague, or New Wave. Like Nouvelle Vague, Northern Wave attempts to revive the recognition of film making as an art form and the director as artist/author. An important goal of the festival is to develop relationships between experienced filmmakers and emerging filmmakers in Iceland and other countries.

The second edition of the festival was held in Icelandic Grundarfjörður between 2nd and 4th March.
