POLISH ANIMATION AT IFF ROTTERDAM

Tomorrow in Dutch Rotterdam the 42nd edition of one of the most important, European film festivals will kick off. This year, a Polish animation - „Ziegenort” by Tomasz Popakul - will be screened in the programme.

“Ziegenort” is a story of a boy growing up in a small fishing village. This is what the author, Tomasz Popakul says about his film: “the story is set in an alternative reality, where II World War never happened. All creatures in the village, humans and animals, live with a proper respect to laws of nature. A father tries to prepare his son to fisherman’s life. I wanted to create a kind of a myth including all creatures that surround me and that are close to me, to rediscover the meaning of symbols like sun, eagle, fish. I intended to create a realistic portrait of anxiety of a growing up teenager and mix them up with a sunny atmosphere of holiday and some kind of world’s cruelty, the beauty and the horror of the nature.”

Tomasz Popakul graduated from Cinematography and Television Production Department at Polish National Film School in Łódź, mastering in animated film. He now works mainly in animated film and music videos. “Ziegenort” is his graduation film, produced by NoLabel – an animation and post production studio based in Krakow. New Europe Film Sales is its sales agent.

Animation will be screened in frames of non-competitive Spectrum Shorts section. Apart from Popakul’s “Ziegenort”, another film, “Before passing” directed by Bianca Lucas – a director of Polish and Australian origin, will be screened in the very same programme. Black and white fiction is a story of a little girl who seeks for a local lunatic in the small, Polish village the day before Lunar Passing.

Festival in Rotterdam will last until 3rd February.
