QUAY BROTHERS’ „MASKA” IN THE COMPETITION IN ROTTERDAM

„Maska” the latest animation directed by Quay Brothers – made upon the Stanisław Lem’s short story will be shown among the films screened in the short film competition of IFF in Rotterdam.

Quay Brothers who are well known from their interest in Polish culture once more decided to base their latest animation upon Polish literature. After adaptations of „Street of Crocodiles” by Bruno Schulz and „Inventorium of Traces” written by Jan Potocki Quay brothers got strongly inspired by futuristic prose of Stanisław Lem and based their film on the short story „Maska”. Lem’s works brought common inspirations and motives to the Quay’s idea of creating a film about a woman-humanoid.

„Maska” is a story of growing consciousness of power, feminity and strength. New caracter inhabitating the somnambulic, spread between dream and a nightmare, world of Quay’s works is countess Duenna. On whitnessing her subjects raising in rebellion she has to confront herself with the new distressing situation. For Quay Brothers this short story brings the opportunity of digressing and exploring their peculiar and intriguing artistic universe. Film has been ilustated by Krzysztof Penderecki’s transcendental music.

24 minutes’ puppet animation was produced at Animation Film Studio Se-Ma-For in Łódź with the support of Polish Cultural Institute in London.

This year’s edition of Festival in Rotterdam – organised for the 40th time – will screen more than 400 films produced in Europe and all over the world from which 28 are taking part in the short film competition. The winners will be announced this evening at the awards gala.
