POLISH DOCUMENTARY IN THE SHORT FILM COMPETITION OF LOCARNO

On July 17th the list of films selected for the upcoming, 66th edition of Locarno Film Festival was announced. A Polish short documentary – “Our curse” by Tomasz Śliwiński received the festival’s invitation to screen as a part of Pardi di domani competition.

The Pardi di domani section screens short and medium-length films by young independent directors, and film school students who have not yet tried their hand at feature films. The section has two separate competitions – Swiss and International. This year’s lineup includes 24 short films produced all over the world. Among them stands a Polish documentary “Our curse”.

A film by Śliwiński is a diary of an intimate struggles of a director and his wife with a terminal disease of their son.  A young Leo suffers from apnoea that affects a small percentage of newborn babies and  is life-threatening. Parents try to come to terms with the condition of their recently born son. In spite of many fears and doubts, they strive to provide him with a normal, happy childhood and equip him well for the life ahead. The documentary was produced by Warsaw Film School where Śliwiński is studying.

Locarno seems a good harbor for Polish filmmakers who for a few years now leave the festival with awards. Last year the short fiction “Battleheart” by Tomasz Matuszczak scored the Special Mention of Cinema & Gioventù Jury while two years ago “Frozen stories” by Grzegorz Jaroszuk received an European Film Academy nomination at the festival.

The 66th edition of Locarno Film Festival will be held between 7 and 17 August.
