POLISH SHORT FILMS IN THE CANNES FILM FESTIVAL PROGRAMME
Excellent news from one of the most prestigious film festivals in the world – a dream destination for filmmakers across the globe. At this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Michał Toczek’s “Spiritus Sanctus” will compete for the Palme d’Or in the Short Film Competition, having been selected among just 10 titles chosen from thousands of submissions worldwide. Meanwhile, Jakub Krzyszpin’s “Axles” will have its world premiere in the La Cinef section, and as many as 11 Polish films will also be presented in the festival’s industry programme.
Established in 1946 and held annually in the city of Cannes on the French Riviera, the Cannes Film Festival remains one of the oldest, most prestigious, and most influential events in global cinema. Each year, it gathers filmmakers and industry professionals from around the world. This year’s edition will take place from May 12 to May 23.
Spiritus Sanctus by Michał Toczek is a highly entertaining film that playfully disrupts the boundaries of reality. Set in June 1999, it follows Bogdan, who must obtain alcohol for his wife’s fiftieth birthday. His task is complicated by the Pope’s visit to Poland and the resulting prohibition, turning a simple trip to the shop into a metaphysical odyssey.
Axles by Jakub Krzyszpin, in turn, takes viewers inside a speeding train, where a man loses his ticket and, in a desperate attempt to recover it, spirals into obsessive searching. The increasingly distorted space pulls him into an unsettling labyrinth.
An important part of the Cannes ecosystem is also the industry-focused Short Film Corner – a platform for showcasing short films and fostering international connections within the film community. It attracts directors, producers, sales agents, and film institutions from around the world. This year, 11 Polish productions will be presented in the Short Film Corner.
