TWO POLISH DOCUMENTARIES AT THE NEW ORLEANS FILM FESTIVAL
Two Polish short documentaries have been selected for the program of the 36th edition of the New Orleans Film Festival – one of the most important film events in the United States, taking place from November 23 to 27.
For over three decades, the festival has been celebrating diversity in cinema, showcasing bold, artistic, and socially engaged productions from around the world. In the Doc Shorts: Portals and Pathways section – featuring films that explore borders, both literal and metaphorical, as well as moments of transition between the known and the unknown – two Polish shorts will be presented.
The first, "Lift Lady" directed by Marcin Modzelewski, is a tragicomic story of Mzia, a former sniper who now operates a paid elevator. Amid the grotesque residents and absurd rules of daily life, the director crafts an ironic yet deeply moving portrait of contemporary Georgia.
The second Polish film, "Bloodline" directed by Wojciech Węglarz, takes place along the Polish-Belarusian border. The camera alternates between observation and the perspective of a bison separated from its herd by a border fence, becoming not only a metaphor for the migration crisis but also a reflection on humanity’s impact on the natural world. Its minimalist form and cool, detached narration provoke contemplation on the arbitrariness of borders and the unseen victims of political decisions.
The New Orleans Film Festival is among the most prestigious international film events, serving as a platform for emerging global talent and an Oscar®-qualifying festival in the short film categories.
