POLISH ANIMATED FILMS IN HIROSHIMA

Today, the 15th edition of Animated Film Festival, which takes place every two years, starts in Hiroshima. In this year's festival competition, as many as six Polish films will compete.

This year's edition commemorates the 30th anniversary of establishing the festival programme office. Together with the festivals in Annecy, Ottawa and Zagreb, the festival in Hiroshima is one of the leading animated film festivals in the world.  Its first edition was held in 1985, on the fortieth anniversary of atomic bombing.  The festival, which is under the patronage of the Japanese ASIFA from the first edition, adopted the motto "Love and Peace," which is mirrored in its programme. Every year, the event gathers almost 35 thousand viewers.

This year, the selection committee, consisting of five people, watched 2,217 films submitted to the festival's selection.  From among 54 Polish films submitted to the festival, five animated films were invited to participate in it, namely, "Hippos" by Piotr Dumała, "Summer 2014" by Wojciech Sobczak, "Fugue For Cello, Trumpet and Landscape" by Jerzy Kucia, "Baths" by Tomek Ducki and "Toto" by Zbigniew Czapla, as well as "Darling" by Izabela Plucińska, made as a German-Polish co-production. In addition, in the student film screening - Stars of Students - "Danse macabre" by Małgorzata Rżanek and "Ab ovo" by Anita Kwiatkowska-Naqvi will be shown. This year, in the festival's competition sections, 59 films produced around the world will compete for awards.

The award-winning films in the international competition will be chosen by the jury, consisting of six people, and the names of the winners will be announced as soon as 25th August.

This year's programme includes numerous anniversary screenings, as well as, among others, the retrospectives of Bruno Bozzetto, Norman McLaren and a series dedicated to Hungarian animation, within the frames of which the best contemporary and classical Hungarian short and feature-length films will be shown; this includes also music videos and advertisements.
