"MOTHER EARTH" BY ZŁOTOROWICZ AWARDED IN LOCARNO

Last Saturday evening ended the Locarno IFF that is considered one of the most prestigious festivals in the world. This year, the jury awarded the Polish short film "Mother Earth" by Piotr Złotorowicz.

The film by Złotorowicz was given the Cinema & Gioventù Jury's Special Mention. This is yet another award in Locarno for the graduate of Lodz Film School. In 2011, two awards at the festival went to Grzegorz Jaroszuk for his "Frozen Stories".

"Mother Earth"
is a psychological drama with elements of mysticism, rooted in the mythology of Polish countryside, the story of the conflict between the expectations of the father (Mirosław Baka) with the abilities and sensitivity of the son (Dariusz Przybył). Maciek - the film's main protagonist - is no longer a boy, but he is not a man yet, either. He wants to fulfil his father's expectations and ambitions, and - like everyone in his family - become a butcher. However, he is too sensitive to make animals suffer. The boy addresses all his warm feelings towards old, neglected orchard - the only thing left by his late mother. [source: filmpolski.pl]

The film had its première screening on 13th August.  Piotr Złotorowicz is well-known to the festival audience thanks to his earlier films - the documentary "Charcoal Burners" and fiction "Normal People". Both films were shown and awarded abroad many times. "Mother Earth" is his diploma film, made at Lodz Film School.
