POLISH SHORTS: TAKE FOUR

This year's edition of POLISH SHORTS compilation features the selection of twelve films representing all short genres. Among this year's debutants we have chosen animations made by students of University of Arts in Poznań – “Games” created by Maja Tetłak and &lqduo; What happens when children don’t eat soup” by Paweł Prewencki, who following the footsteps of Robert Proch's (the author of numerously awarded “Gallery”) are now about to enter the international festival circuit. The group of well-known authors is represented here by Balbina Bruszewska and her “The Good, the Beauty and the Truth” produced by Se-Ma-For Studio as well as Izabela Plucińska who in her latest clay animation “Afternoon” returns to the motives she first revealed six years earlier in “Breakfast” depicting the nuances of relationship between man and a woman. “Noise” created by Przemysław Adamski as a part of the First Animation programme lunched by Munk Studio invites us to discover the fascinating universe of sounds and their influence on our lives.
Among the issues taken up by documentary filmmakers the prevailing subjects are those difficult that we tend to notice so rarely. What those films have in common is their humane approach in which they deal with the complex subjects such as loneliness (“Hermits”), family affairs (“Written in Ink”) or social exclusion (“3days of Freedom”).
What is significant fiction films reflect on very similar subjects. In “Normal people” Piotr Złotorowicz depicts the wrestle with difficulties that main protagonist experiences after leaving the prison. Krzysztof Kasior’s “To war we go” is a story of two friends, who embark on a military campaign to Afghanistan and whose life will get irreversibly changed. Michał Janów in his bitter-sweet “Porter from Mewa Hotel” set in the communist era shows the life of a man whose chase of perfection lead to the deadlock. Finally “Drawn from memory” by Marcin Bortkiewicz is a poignant portrait of the family who grows up to understanding and love in the face of the mental disease of their grandmother.
Although each of the directors whose films are featured at POLISH SHORTS 2011 compillation develops their stories in a different manner they are all united by the close sensibility and temperament and an excellent sense of craft demonstrating the high artistic quality of Polish short film that each year celebrates numerous successes abroad.
The DVD is not for sale and it has been produced in order to distribute among international film professionals.
